Skull Splitter takes its name after Torfinn Hausakljuv who was nicknamed "Skullsplitter". Hausakluif was the 7th Viking Earl of Orkney sometime around 950 AD. Orkney is a small group of islands off the northern tip of Scotland, shrouded in magic and mystery. For over 100 years the Orkney Islands off the north of Scotland were under Norwegian rule. In the year 963, Thorfinn Einarsson was named the 7th Viking Earl of Orkney. The islands were the home of Thorfinn Hausakluif (Skullsplitter), 7th Viking Earl of Orkney, around 1000 A.D.
The Orkney brewery is housed in the former schoolhouse in Quoyloo 1 mile from Skara Brae in the heart of Neolithic Orkney.
Skull Splitter Orkney Island Strong Ale
On the nose, this strong beer has a fruity malt character, with hints of dark fruit, spicy hop, dates and figs. In Skull Splitter the crystal malts and caramelization leap to the forefront in a bouquet that provides a strong, sweet aroma.
A rich, fruity, wine-like complexity on the palate includes fresh and dried fruits, warm exotic spices, and light summer citrus fruits. Finish with a taste reminiscent of roasted walnuts.
