André Dion and Serge Racine saw great potential in the craft-beer market, but they were faced with a challenge. In 1990, it was very difficult to obtain a brewer's permit in Quebec. In order to bypass this, Dion and Racine acquired 75 % of La Brasserie Massawippi Inc. in Lennoxville, a company that was in financial difficulty at the time, and distributed their products.
These brews craftsman beers are for savouring. They have a unique taste and
a traditional brewing method. During 1991, the owners purchased the
remainder of the shares and transferred their interest in La Brasserie Massawippi Inc. to Unibroue. By 1992, La Brasserie Massawippi Inc. became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Unibroue.
The Blanche is only partially filtered so that it retains the full benefits of its natural ingredients. This gives it the cloudy appearance that was characteristic of pale beers in the Middle Ages. While it is naturally of a champagne color, it appears white because of the fresh yeast in suspension.

In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Buy
