Joseph Magnus Bourbon
Joseph A. Magnus was a real life distiller in the 1800s who
shuttered his business during prohibition. His great grandson sought to
resurrect the family trade, and chose the District as the distillery’s new home;
recent DC laws permitting spirit sales on premises make the city an attractive
place to produce liquor. The Bourbon is aged eight years, inspired by 100 more.
Joseph Magnus Bourbon is a marriage of straight bourbon whiskey aged in white
oak and finished in Oloroso sherry, Pedro Ximénez and Cognac casks.
The flavors derived from the different barrel finishes elicit strong dark fruit
and tobacco notes that usually only pop up as lighter notes in a typical

Bourbon is typically aged in large warehouses, with giant shelves built in so that dozens of stories of barrels can be aged. As you can imagine, there is much more volatility in the temperature near the roofs of these warehouses, as opposed to those on the floor. Large fluctuations in temperature, as well as high temperature in general, cause whiskeys to “age” faster and lose more to “the angel’s share,” or the amount of liquid lost to evaporation.
