America’s first whiskey distilling company, Michter’s rich history dates back to 1753 when a farmer in Pennsylvania’s Blue Mountain Valley distilled his first batch of whiskey from hardy rye. At one point a Master Distiller left his family’s well-known distillery to join Michter’s so he could be at a smaller, less cost-conscious company where he could make the finest whiskey, cost be damned.
Michter’s is the nation's oldest continuously operational whiskey distillery had
it not closed its doors during the Prohibition years. Michter’s whiskey is often
much older than the age statement on the label. At Michter’s they produce single
barrel ryes, very small batch unblended American whiskey, very small batch
bourbon, and single barrel bourbon.

Michter’s US 1 Bourbon is made from a carefully selected mashbill that
features the highest quality American corn. It is then matured to the peak of
perfection, with barrels often aging in excess of eight years. Truly “small
batch,” each batch of our US 1 Bourbon is typically composed of no more than two
dozen barrels, leaving no margin for “blending out” imperfection and thus
necessitating excellence from every barrel. Reflecting the spirit of the

American Whiskey 4 year old
Unlike Bourbon or Rye, which, by definition, must be aged in new oak
barrels, this US 1 Unblended American Whiskey is aged in a way that utilizes
bourbon-soaked barrels to achieve a rich and unique flavor profile. In late
2013, Master Distiller Willie Pratt agreed to re-release this US 1 Unblended
American Whiskey after a nearly three-year absence from the market, deeming it
“just right” and “the best it’s ever been.” Crucially, this US 1 Unblended
American Whiskey never contains grain neutral spirits – hence its “unblended”

Bourbon most likely got its name from Bourbon County, located in the central Bluegrass region of Kentucky, and named to honor the French Royal Family. The region once housed the major shipping ports for distilled spirits heading down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to New Orleans, so Bourbon and Whiskey soon became synonymous.
