Forester Mint Julep
The 2016 Kentucky Derby is the 142nd renewal of The Greatest Two Minutes in
Sports. In honor of a grand tradition, Old Forester Mint Julep, a 60-proof
ready-to-serve cocktail made with Old Forester Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky,
was created and named the Official Drink of the Kentucky Derby. While Old
Forester was introduced in 1870 and the Kentucky Derby in 1875, the 141st
Kentucky Derby marks the first time the two long-standing Louisville traditions
have come together officially. Churchill Downs, the world's most legendary
racetrack, has conducted Thoroughbred racing and presented America's greatest
race, the Kentucky Derby, continuously since 1875. It is a big event not just
for the horses and high society in Louisville, but also the bourbon industry.

Early Times Mint Julep
Early Times Mint Julep Cocktail is a ready-to-serve beverage that has been the "The Official Mint Julep of the Kentucky Derby®" for years. Churchill Downs serves more than 80,000 Early Times Mint Julep Cocktails every Kentucky Derby week, using about 8,000 Liters of Early Times Mint Julep Ready-To-Serve Cocktail, 2200 pounds of freshly harvested mint, and 80 tons of shaved ice. The word “julep” is derived from the Persian “julab” meaning rose water.
Try one and you'll understand why we've been a Kentucky Derby® tradition for over 16 years. Many Kentuckians claim that when a Julep is done right, you can hear the angels sing. One 19th-century jurist is said to have ruled, "Who has not tasted one has lived in vain." Then again, newspaper editor Henry Watterson's recipe for the perfect Mint Julep is somewhat different, his recipe: "…throw the other ingredients away and drink the whisky - straight."

Mint Julep Cocktail
The Mint Julep has always been a symbol of Kentucky's rich heritage and hospitality. Perhaps General Simon Bolivar Buckner put it best when he wrote from the South Pacific during World War II: "A Mint Julep is not the product of a formula. It is a ceremony that must be performed by one possessing a true sense of the artistic, a deep reverence for the ingredients and a proper appreciation of the occasion."
The Kentucky Derby
It is well-known as the traditional beverage of the Kentucky Derby, a position it has held since 1938; during the event, more than 80,000 juleps are served at Churchill Downs. For over 18 years, the Early Times Mint Julep Cocktail has been the designated "official mint julep of the Kentucky Derby".
A mint julep is traditionally made of four ingredients: mint, bourbon, sugar, and water. In the use of sugar and mint, it is similar to the
