Monkey 47 Gin
Based off of
an early 1950's recipe that was uncovered during the renovation of a country
guesthouse in the heart of Germany's Black Forest, distillers Alexander Stein
and Christoph Keller have given life to this lost spirit. Alexander Stein, who’s
seen plenty of new gins from smaller distilleries come and go in recent years,
knows all too well that clever marketing is not enough to make a product
successful in the long term. The story of the mother of all German indie gins
starts exactly ten years ago. While Alexander was working the US, a friend got
in touch about the curious discovery of an old gin recipe from the Black Forest.
He had unearthed that Alexander himself was a descendant of the family that had
founded a distillery the region, one that had later fallen out of their hands. A
year and a half and over 120 test distillates later, Alexander and Christoph
agreed on the gin’s final composition. Forty seven different ingredients found
their way into his recipe, about a third of which originated from the Black
Forest, including acacia blooms, spruce shoots and blackberry leaves. Starting
with a molasses based distillate, 47 different botanicals are macerated for 36
hours prior to being distilled on small copper Holstein still.
Monkey 47 Gin 375ml
Monkey 47 is a global triumph of passion and craft. It started with a love for
London dry gin, adds regional plant ingredients including lingonberries,
hand-peeled citrus fruits, herbs, flowers and exotic Indian spices of the
highest quality and mixes them with centuries of German distilling expertise.
It's very well structured. On the nose, aromas of wood, grass, citrus and sweet
botanicals. On the palate, powerful and robust with complex, layered flavors of
spice, fruit, citrus, herb and oak, excellent structure and a dry finish. The
result is a master-quality gin of complexity and harmony unlike any other.
Price: 375ml $50.32

The 47 botanicals, as the herbal ingredients are referred to, and their
respective states – such as fresh lemon peel, only half-dried juniper berries –
result in almost infinite possible combinations. The pepper mixture alone
consists of several different botanicals. Their production time for gin is
restricted to six months a year because the long list of botanicals includes
fresh citrus fruit. This means the recipe is impossible to copy. A newcomer to a
trade knows he doesn’t know anything. That can be an advantage.
Martinis are the toast of the town! They're evocative. Sophisticated. Sensual.
They appeal to those who are savvy. Suave. Confident. With liquid elegance and
glamorous mystique, martinis launched today's discriminating cocktail culture
and turned bartenders into "bar chefs."
