Joseph Magnus Distillery is part of the burgeoning Washington DC craft spirit
scene which has come to prominence in the past years. Joseph Magnus was a
pre-prohibition distiller out of Cincinnati, who was best known for his Murray
Hill Club bourbon. The name relates to an old capital city brand that was lost
to America’s Prohibition. The Jos. A. Magnus & Co. distillery, captures the
glamour and passion of the time. Studio 32 North has worked to revitalize the
venerable old brand Joseph A. Magnus & Co. Although a new venture, there are
many seasoned vets behind the project and the namesake Magnus family is involved
in the brand’s relaunch.
This London-styled dry gin has an older,
Prohibition era look to it.
Vigilant Gin was inspired by
the Joseph Magnus Distillery
quest to make the perfect
cocktail gin. The bottle features a
combination of different fonts, from an elegant script to fat letters with drop
shadows, as well as a combination of details, borders, and other illustrations
to emphasize its high quality. The unique botanicals like cubeb pepper, thyme,
marionberry, bergamot orange, and oroblanco grapefruit, plus a za’atar blend
with sumac, and sesame in addition to the traditional juniper and cardamom and
more, and these are placed on the front label subtly. A wooden cap adds even
more class, with a dark finish that helps to solidify its distinguished
appearance. Strong flavors of minty juniper, while notes of grapefruit and
orange citrus, dried dark fruits, and vanilla round out and polish the edges.
Although delightful to sip by itself, this is intended to be the perfect
cocktail gin, and it does pretty well.

We’re in the middle of a new Gin Craze. Scarcely a day goes by without an
established brand offering a fresh take on their styles or, more likely, a new
boutique distillery opening its doors – where gin is de rigueur.
The name comes from the French name for the juniper berry, genièvre, altered by the Dutch to genever and shortened by the English to gin. Gin is made by distilling juniper berries. Sometimes other flavorings are added during the distillation process, such as orange peel, licorice root, lime or grapefruit peel.
