Campari is a bitter Italian aperitif made according to a secret recipe originally developed in 1860 by Gaspare Campari in Milan. Campari is the result of a unique blend of aromatic herbs mellowed in selected spirit.
Campari is an essential ingredient in the classic Negroni cocktail, the Garibaldi cocktail, and in the Americano, which was named at a time when few Americans were aware of Campari.
Campari has always been a symbol of passion - passion that expresses itself in
terms of seduction, sensuality and transgression. These are the values that have
made the Campari brand famous throughout the world as an icon of Italian style
and excellence. The idea of serving one part Campari with one part gin is a
masterpiece of Italian drinking culture. You can add one more part of sweet
vermouth if you're drinking past brunch hour.
Bright pale cherry-pink color. Piercingly herbal with a blast of bitterness and fruity notes. Hugely bitter and zesty with a searing, tangy finish. Highly concentrated, this needs a shot of something and ice.
A glass of Campari smells bitter in the way that orange rinds and bitter greens
smell. Tasting it, however, reveals much more. The bitterness is still strong,
at the start and again at the finish, but there are notes of sweet cherry and
orange, and a spicy edge reminiscent of cinnamon. The longer you sip on it, the
more apparent the sweetness becomes. But the bitter never goes away. Leaves the tastebuds very alive.
