Knappogue Castle
located in Quin Village, County Clare, Ireland, a truly picturesque setting, was built in 1467 by Sean MacNamara, and is a magnificent example of a medieval tower house. It has a long and varied history from a battle field to a dwelling place. In 1571 the Castle became the seat of the MacNamara Clan Earls of West Clancullen. Donagh MacNamara was a leader of the 1641 rebellion and then Knappogue remained in MacNamara hands until 1659 when it was confiscated by Cromwells parliament and granted to a ‘Roundhead’, Arthur Smith. The castle’s history is imaginatively related on colourful panels throughout its rooms.
In the 1960s, Mark Edwin Andrews, an American with a keen interest in fine whiskey and a love of Ireland, bought the remaining casks of whiskey distilled at the prestigious B. Daly Distillery. This rare pot-distilled whiskey, was made in 1951 and and aged in sherry casks for 36 years before it was bottled in 1987. Mr. Andrews named it Knappogue Castle Whiskey after the castle he owned in Ireland.Unlike single malt Scotch, no peat is used in the drying of the malt. Knappogue is lightly chill filtered and, unlike many whiskeys, no artificial coloring is added. And, like fine wines, our whiskey is marked with the year of its creation. All this results in a unique, crisp clean flavor that varies from vintage to vintage.

Info!
For centuries Irish whiskey was pot-distilled and sold in casks. Knappogue Castle 1951 is one of the last examples of that tradition. It differs from Scotch single malts in three important ways: (1) it was made from both malted and unmalted barley; (2) no peat was used to dry the malt; (3) it was triple distilled, one batch at a time in copper pots. Long-aged, this spirit is an astonishing whiskey with unsurpassed smoothness and a very complex, slightly sweet finish.
