Who invented the margarita? We're afraid that there's no definitive answer to that question, but here are some of the stories we've heard throughout the years:
1. Danny Negrete, a Los Angeles bartender, created the drink in 1936 for his girlfriend, Margarita. It seems that this particular Margarita was somewhat addicted to salt, so Danny invented a drink with salt on the rim.
2. Texas socialite Margarita Sames created the drink to serve at one of the frequent cocktail parties at her Acapulco weekend home. It's said that she first came up with the recipe at a Christmas party attended by Nicky Hilton, heir to the Hilton hotel chain and owner of the Tail of the Cock restaurant in Los Angeles. He, in turn, introduced the cocktail to Americans.
3. Sara Morales, a Mexican folklore expert, says that the drink was created by Doña Bertha, the owner-bartender of Bertha's Bar in Taxco, Mexico.
Whatever the truth of the matter (most people side with Margarita Sames), in order to make a good margarita, the correct proportions of ingredients are imperative. We experimented for years, but it wasn't until our friends Ann and Larry Walker, authors of
Tequila: The
Book, visited us about three years ago that we finally learned the secret. "It's as easy as one, two, three," they said. "One part fresh lime juice, two parts triple sec, and three parts tequila." We've never varied the recipe since, unless we're using an orange-flavored brandy instead of the triple sec, in which case the lime juice is stepped up a little in order to balance the somewhat sweeter orange liqueur. Try both recipes below and see which one you favor.
Margarita No. 1
1-1/2 ounces white tequila
1 ounce triple sec
1/2 ounce fresh lime juice
Margarita No. 2
1-1/2 ounces white tequila
1 ounce orange-flavored brandy, such as Grand Marnier
1 ounce fresh lime juice
1. Combine the ingredients in a cocktail shaker
two-thirds full of ice. Shake until well chilled. Strain the mixture into a salt-rimmed (optional)
margarita or martini
glass.
