The distillery was
built in the 1820s, and was acquired
by Distillers Company Limited in
1925. The distillery closed in 1983,
although supplies of the malt are
still available. Although the distillery is now silent, the adjacent maltings are still operational and supplying all Islay distilleries, thanks to an official agreement signed to secure employment for the island’s workforce.
One time owner, John Ramsay, was highly instrumental in the development of the first Spirit Safe. He also was the first to
realize value of exporting to USA.
Due to the closing of the distillery, Port Ellen whisky is becoming more and more collectable.
Port Ellen Single Malt Scotch Whisky This product is a unique and superlative tasting representation of its distillery, following the tradition of independent bottling of single malt scotches. Enjoy it neat, or with a splash of water.
Color - Bright Gold
Nose - Very medicinal, but clean and firm.
Body - Exceptionally oily, creamy
Palate - Smooth and deceptively restrained at first, then the tightly combined flavors emerge: bay leaves, parsley, peppercorns.
Finish - Slowly unfolding. Salty, smoky, oaky. Very warming. A subtlety and complexity to which no aquavit or pepper vodka could aspire.
Single Malt
Single Malt
indicates that the whisky was made in only one distillery and has not been blended with any other whisky from another distillery. It may contain whisky from several batches, and some could be two or three years older than the age on the bottle. The age statement on the bottle must show youngest whisky contained within the bottle. They are found predominantly in Speyside, the Highlands, and the islands of the west coast.
