Copper Fox Distillery was formed in January of 2000. In the years prior the seed of an idea planted in
Rick Wasmund's brain on how he could make a distinct and wonderful whisky by using special fruitwood peat, and fruitwood barrels in the traditional whisky making process. The seed germinated as
he explored most all the distilleries in the U.S. and the more
he took in, the more he thought his ideas could work. By spring of 2000
Rick Wasmund decided he needed to go to Scotland, home of over 130 distilleries and some of the best whisky in the world. The seed sprouted and began digging in its roots.
His Scotland trip was magical and inspirational beyond belief.
He walked through rainbows, climbed castle walls, and met some of the nicest, most helpful people
he could ever want to know. Wasmund brought his ideas back to his property in Sperryville, where he began breathing new life into his dream. In years prior, Wasmund had purchased some apple warehouse property in Sperryville. He initially founded Copper Fox antiques, before selling the business to Alex Sharp. Wadsmund's single malt whiskey is a product that is distinctly Virginian. Wasmund gets his malt barley from Heathsville, Virginia. The barley is grown there locally by Billy Dawson for the Bay's Best Feed store. The
Wasmund's Single Malt Whisky Wasmund's Single Malt Whisky combines the best of the grand tradition of single malt whisky with creative and unique innovations for aging and flavoring that result in a special spirit that has no peer.
The foundation of Wasmund's product is Thoroughbred barley from their own private grower and used by no other distillery.
They malt their own, in small batches, using a traditional floor malting the way it's been done for centuries in Scotland. Although the process is still young, the Copper Fox crew works steadily, keeping the distillery building in motion producing batch after batch of fine whiskey. The fruit wood aging process gives it a strong, smooth flavor that lingers on the palate long after the last sip.
Single Malt
Single Malt
indicates that the whisky was made in only one distillery and has not been blended with any other whisky from another distillery. It may contain whisky from several batches, and some could be two or three years older than the age on the bottle. The age statement on the bottle must show youngest whisky contained within the bottle. They are found predominantly in Speyside, the Highlands, and the islands of the west coast.
