Rodney Strong Vineyards
More than 50 years ago, a celebrated American dancer named Rod Strong settled in Sonoma County to pursue a second lifelong creative passion: winemaking. Rodney Strong was one of the pioneers of Sonoma County’s modern wine industry, an acknowledged visionary who understood the potential that Sonoma County’s soil and climate held for producing world-class wines. Rodney Strong Vineyards was the 13th winery bonded in the newly discovered Sonoma County wine industry. Beginning in 2005, their Symmetry meritage is created in their new small lot winemaking facility, a “winery within the winery.” Under the direction of consulting winemaker David Ramey, they employ cutting edge techniques such as cluster pre-sorting, berry sorting, and extended maceration. With small tanks and equipment sized for the most discriminating vineyard selection process, their new facility is truly state-of-the-art, and represents the Klein family commitment towards producing the finest wines possible.
Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2012
Full bodied and richly textured, this cabernet displays intense aromas and flavors of blackberry, cassis, earth, and black olive, with a smooth, lingering finish. Structured to be age-worthy, it is layered with the addition of merlot, which not only adds complexity, it also serves to round out the mid-palate and soften the abundant ripe tannins just enough to make this a big wine that you can enjoy now. However, if you have access to a cool dark place, lay some bottles of this Reserve down for up to ten years, and patience will reward you as well! "The winery’s reserve Cab has been variable over the years, but this ’02 is really a very good wine that will reward cellaring. It’s luscious now, but such are the tannins, the dry balance, and the freshness of the blackberry flavors, that time in the bottle is bound to reward."

Rodney Strong Symmetry 2011
Celebrating the esteemed art of blending, Symmetry captures the essence of the Alexander Valley. With 40 years experience growing classic French grape varieties here, they select their best cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and other traditional Bordeaux grapes from the hills that overlook the valley, where well-drained rocky soils combine with warm, sunny days and cool nights to provide ideal growing conditions. Select areas within each vineyard are hand harvested individually, fermented separately, and aged in the finest French oak barrels.
"Rodney Strong’s Symmetry is more tannic than their ’05 Reserve Cab, and it also has more complex flavors from being a blend of all five Bordeaux varieties. It shows a deep streak of dark stone fruits, black and blue berries, cassis, carob, violets and smoky cedar. Fine and elegant now, and it should develop nicely over the next decade." -Rated 94, Wine Enthusiast

The Meritage Alliance was formed to distinguish high-quality, hand-crafted blends wines from ordinary, generic ones and, additionally, limits the blending to the traditional Bordeaux varieties which include these reds: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec... Much of the art of wine is in the blend, and varietal wines come with regulations and limitations. American law requires a minimum of 75% of the named grape for a varietal wine, such as Cabernet Sauvignon.
